-Gov. Cuomos challenger Cynthia Nixon and a Brooklyn state Senate candidate taking on a longtime incumbent swapped endorsements Monday.First time candidate Julia Salazar is running against Sen. Martin Dilan hoping to ride a wave of upstart progressive challenges to an upset victory. The two candidates are pushing for stronger rent regulation laws and hit their opponents for being too friendly to real estate while accepting donations from the industry.Nixon blamed corporate Democrats who say theyre fighting for tenants but are not doing it for Albanys failure to close loopholes that allow landlords to jack up rents. It is hard for some of our elected leaders to do the right thing when they are getting literally millions to do wrong she said at a press conference at Maria Hernandez Park. We are taking on centrist corporate Democrats whose entire careers have been financed by dirty money from the real estate industry.Activist group New York Communities for Change also endorsed Salazars campaign.Salazar who like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez calls herself a democratic socialist called 2018 a new year in politics that would give her a chance where previous challengers to Dilan have come up short. He twice previously beat back primary challenges from candidate Debbie Medina. We know that the residents of north Brooklyn will turn out even bigger Salazar said.Nixon previously swapped endorsements with Ocasio-Cortez who defeated powerful Queens Rep. Joe Crowley in a stunning upset in last weeks Congressional primary. The state primary is on Sept. 13.Dilan has dismissed his challenger as someone with no record noting he has been a presence in his district and frequently faced competitive races to keep his seat.
